DOCUMENTARY, USA 2022 – 33’42’’ – IN COLLABORATION WITH LINEA LESBICA E ANTIVIOLENZA by Lesbiche Bologna

ENGLISH WITH ITALIAN AND ENGLISH SUBTITLES
Translated by Caro Gervasi

When she was a sophomore in college, Olivia Muse endured an emotionally abusive relationship with her first girlfriend. Four years later, Olivia still can’t help but wonder: “Did that happen to me because I’m a bad lesbian?” Since when did abuse happen in the queer community? And why isn’t anyone talking about this?

Now, Olivia is tired of the silence. Through documenting her own recovery, Olivia challenges the narrative of abuse, empowers other survivors, and tries to motivate change in a community from within.

DIRECTORS

Ava Palmo is a documentary filmmaker based in New York City. Recent associate producer credits include X/onerated, about Malcolm X’s wrongly accused killers, and a three-part Hulu documentary on Emmett Till’s heroic mother, Mamie. Prior to getting her Master’s at Columbia Journalism School in the documentary film program, she worked at ABC News’ Lincoln Square Productions, where she developed pitches and worked in post-production. Ava was raised by filmmaker parents in Austin, working on movie sets in the summers, before she moved to Massachusetts to get her B.A. at Williams College. She’s currently working on a documentary series about Mississippi’s notorious Parchman Prison, produced by A&E, ITV and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.

Madeline Johnson is a documentary filmmaker and multimedia journalist from Waco, Texas. She currently works for BBC Global News in their New York Bureau, producing short-form documentaries and digital content. Before attending Columbia Journalism School, Madeline studied filmmaking and sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior films she worked on include Until Proven Innocent, a documentary about Texas activists working to abolish the death penalty and At Arm’s Length, which explored journalists’ relationships with mass shooting survivors.

Olivia Muse is a journalist and filmmaker from Pittsburgh, PA. She currently works as a video producing fellow at McClatchy Newsrooms. When she was a marketing intern at WGBH in college, Olivia spent significant time sneaking into film shoots and live tapings. This landed her at FRONTLINE PBS as a post-production and special projects intern, where she worked while completing her Bachelor’s degree. At Columbia, she met the co-directors of Bad Lesbian, a film that explores her own experience and survival of LGBTQ+ intimate partner violence. Olivia hopes to continue in the documentary field with a focus on stories that are told through a trauma-informed lens.
